伦理学离开了宇宙学就是不可理解的。世界既是物质又是神。宇宙的基本物质：火，靠一种宇宙理性原理——逻各斯的活动而转变为各种物质状态，而逻各斯就是神。在宇宙的变化过程中，有规律的循环过程一再出现，一次又一次返回到宇宙大火，在宇宙大火中，原始的火结束一个周期又开始另一个周期。每个周期都是完全相同的，所以这个宇宙中的每一时间都无限地反复出现

基督教还对适用于团体的道德律令与用于个人的道德律令做了历史性区分。这一学说的世俗形式，要求所有的人享有最低限度的平等权利，因而要求所有的人想要最低限度的自由，是基督教在17世纪的主要成就，它集中表达在掘地派的宣言中和某些平等派成员的主张中。英国内战期间过会军队中的左翼运动，首次表达了自由与平等的世俗观念，与所有传统形式的等级制度发生了决裂

波斯入侵、殖民化、贸易往来的增长，以及因此而产生的旅行的增长等等方面的影响，使人了解了不同文化的实情，结果出现这样两个不同的问题：一是那在埃及被认为善的，在波斯就不认为是善的，在雅典认为是善的，在梅加拉就不认为是善的；二是什么是万物的秩序的要素这一普遍问题，变得无比重要了。任何关于道德规则或社会实践的问题都是：道德规则或社会实践本质上是当地风俗习惯的一部分呢，还是本质上是宇宙自然领域的一部分？这问题也自然与下列问题相关：我能自由选择什么规则来成为我自己的规则？或者我应该遵守什么限制？如何我愿在哪个城市可以自由选择一样，因此，我应遵循什么习俗而生活也可选择吗？或者说，宇宙自然为我的合法选择规定了限度吗？回答这些问题的任务是由公元前5世纪一个新的教师和弟子阶层来承担的，道德哲学的著述通常是由这些教师即智者写出的。今天我们主要是通过其反对者柏拉图的著述而了解他们的。但是，作为供应者的智者们的活动，如果撇开他们面对的时代要求，则是难以理解的
